Bernie the cat was always wary of strangers. Whenever someone new came into the house, Bernie would hide under the couch and watch them carefully. One day, a new family moved in next door, and Bernie was especially wary of the little girl who lived there. She seemed nice enough, but Bernie had been fooled before.
One day, when the little girl was playing outside, Bernie decided to sneak up and investigate. He crept up carefully, his eyes fixed on her every move. She turned around suddenly and Bernie froze, his heart racing. But instead of running away, the little girl reached out her hand and offered to pet him. Bernie was surprised, but also curious. He cautiously sniffed her hand and then allowed her to scratch his ears.
From that day on, Bernie was still wary of strangers, but he had learned that sometimes it was okay to trust new people. He even started to sneak over to the little girl's yard for a visit every now and then. But he always remained alert, just in case.
